About Us
Meet Giulia
Hi, I’m Giulia! I graduated from Virginia Tech, where I earned my Bachelors of Arts in English Technical Writing, English Literature and Language with a pre law concentration, and Linguistics. After graduating, I moved back to the D.C./ Northern Virginia area.
I have six years of experience as an English and writing tutor. In college, I worked as a tutor in my university’s writing center and also worked as a technical writing consultant and tutor in our university technical writing center. Over the years, I’ve worked with a variety of students from numerous educational and linguistic backgrounds.
In addition to my technical writing background, my linguistics studies provided me with a deeper understanding of grammar and syntax—so I can better explain the complexities of the English language to both native and non-native English speakers. Whatever your background or goals I am excited to work with you!
Why Choose The Green Light?
In my six years of experience with English services, I’ve worked with clients from both professional and academic backgrounds, and frequently help with creative or personal writing projects. While my work with professional clients has primarily focused on technical writing and editing, my academic experience ranges from working with elementary schoolers to editing doctoral dissertations, and everything in between!
Most importantly, I have worked with a variety of people! Everyone has different comfort levels and needs, and I hope I can make you feel encouraged as we work towards meeting your goals.
The Significance of The Green Light
You may have noticed a few Great Gatsby themes floating around the site. I am a huge fan of The Great Gatsby, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create an English related website with a Gatsby theme. If you aren't familiar with the book, or you really just aren't getting what I was trying to do, let me provide some context from the novel and explain the biggest reason for my choosing of the company’s name.
In the novel, “the green light” is a symbol for our main character’s goals and dreams. Our main character, Jay Gatsby, spends all of his time idealizing his one goal to the point in which it becomes all-consuming. Rather than making any real progress to accomplish his goals, Gatsby spends years fantasizing about his future life: a life that can only be attained if he reaches this one goal. Because of this, his dreams became wildly unrealistic over time. When he finally takes action and eventually gets what he wants, he is disappointed and doesn't care about what he has finally accomplished.
One recurring theme in the novel is that the characters are so focused on the future (or the past) that they never notice what is in front of them and what they have done. These goals that they wanted so desperately to reach become meaningless once they have been attained.
Now that I’ve unpacked all of that a little bit, here are a few of the ways that the novel connects to what I want to accomplish with The Green Light Tutoring. The Green Light should serve as a reminder to …
Always hope, dream, and set goals—but make sure that you work towards them! Setting goals won’t do you any good unless you actively try to accomplish them. The longer that you don’t act, the more daunting they seem.
We, as people, don’t celebrate our accomplishments enough. Stop for a moment and reflect on all you’ve done before moving on to your next goal.
Ask for help when you need it. Try to learn and grow on your own, but there is a wealth of knowledge and experience waiting for you if you need help. If you ask for help, you may learn more and reach your goals faster (and hopefully with less stress).
My goal with The Green Light is to have a beacon of inspiration, one that does not fade, so you can reach your goals even through the fog. Sounds a little cheesy, I know, but I was inspired to start The Green Light Tutoring because of the COVID-19 pandemic—when all hope really seemed lost. I missed engaging in conversation and practicing speaking Italian. I missed helping people with their writing. I missed engaging with clients and seeing how excited they became when they noticed that their work was improving. I knew that after I graduated I wanted to find a way to continue tutoring and working with others on their English related projects and goals, and with The Green Light—I can!
Why “Tutoring”?
After browsing “our services” you’ll notice that I do more than just “tutor.” I decided to add “tutoring” to the company name because I believe that help can come in a variety of forms. Although the word tutor can seem restrictive in its connotation, I see it as a reminder.
My goal is to leave every client with new knowledge and information—no matter how hands off our interaction may be. If you choose to use my copy editing services, homework help services, or just want to chat, I believe that we both come away from our interaction with new information and hopefully have a positive effect on each other.
My goal is to help everyone in some way, so “tutoring” may not seem like the most accurate term for an all-encompassing online English services, but I aim to impart knowledge, guide you, instruct you, and help you achieve whatever it is that you have set out to accomplish, no matter how small or large this task might be!
